Yes, if you have heard rumors about our chapter house being sold to Hillsdale College, it is true that we are in current negotations with the administration over the possible sale. Following are our reasons, which I hope you will read with an open mind:

1) While Sigma Chi remains the only greek house on campus to own its chapter house, the College does not treat us any differently than the other fraternities or sororities. They have the authority, through providing for student welfare, to come into our house at any time and issue fines. At this time, we really are independent in name only.

2) A sale of the house would allow all donations to a capital campaign to become tax deductible (using the college's tax-exempt status). Because those interested in providing significant financial support to our endeavors want to be able to claim a tax deduction in return for their donation, this is the only avenue in which to accomodate their gifts.

3) A sale would allow us to significantly reduce our insurance premiums, which currently nearly equal our montly mortgage payments (the annual total is $12,000). As well, the college would take responsibility for maintenance of the property and take over our existing debt, allowing all donations to go toward capital improvements. At this time, House Corp. continues to just barely meet our financial obligations. With insurance costs continuing to rise, we are being forced to raise rent again; this cannot go on, and we need a long-term solution.

4) We are insistent that any approved lease agreement with the college provide us with the option to purchase back our house at a future date.

We realize that many have strong feelings about our independence, which we share. This matter definitely is not being taken lightly, and is only in the beginning stages. We welcome your concerns and ask for your input as we move forward with plans to strengthen the Alpha Kappa Chapter. Please contact us via the email links provided on the House Corp. homepage.
